I use Gnome 2 too, and that applet doesn't work properly without a patch
for acpi. I think I saw a patch for it recently on debian-devel, you
might search the archives.

I know when I was using ACPI I compilled it directly into the kernel.

At any rate, your output above can only mean one of two things:

1) missing ACPI module somewhere
2) Your laptop is not 100% ACPI compliant/compatible.

I have the Compaq Presario 720CA which is pretty much the same as your
model (in fact the Compaq support web site often puts the presario 700
series and your series together for patches). I haven't had too many
troubles with ACPI.
