Sound problems with a Compaq Presario 905AE

Hi. I'm new on the list, so hello everyone! :)

I've recently bought a Compaq Presario 905EA and I'm trying to get Linux
to work at it's full on it. I already have almost everything working,
but the sound is giving me some problems.

The sound card seems to be an ALI M5451 one, supported by both the
standard kernel (in the trident driver) and ALSA, but I couldn't get it
to work: Both drivers lock my computer after loading them.

After loading the kernel trident module, I always get this message:

hda: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }

hda: drive not ready for command
ide0: reset: success

and after that, the HD starts producing weird errors until the computer
crashes or I can't launch any program. I think this is some kind of IRQ
or other hw related problem, as the card itself seems to be supported.

Any idea about this? I'm dying to use xmms, ogle and mplayer with sound
on this baby. :)

Anyway, I've set up a page with my progress so far and some more info on
the hardware/system (dmesg, scanpci, etc). It's available at
