Use a framebuffer kernel. Then your consoles are also in graphics mode
and the S3VIRGE family don't mangle out on you.
I encountered this first on the Tuxtops Topaz (Asus 8400, also known as
Chembook and some other popular models) and at first my boss thought I
was nuts, because he couldn't reproduce it. But, if you like to live in
both the graphical and text-console worlds, you -will- provoke odd
effects. I didn't get lockups from it but only the graphic mode behaves
itself. Apparently it needs some variety of reset which it is not being
given, and eventually it loses some internal game of musical chairs.
On the flip side - oh, it's so beautiful. I had such happy eyeballs
while I was using that system.

A practice generally to be recommended as soon as the new-plastic smell
wears off of your laptop, if not sooner.
