Newer Phoenix BIOS does have it, but I've not encountered in such, any
ability to tun it off. If you use APM, ACPI will be ignored, and vice
versa.
You'll have to experiment to determine whether ACPI works better (or at all)
on your hardware, since more is involved than the BIOS itself. This is part
of the nature of ACPI - in full flower, every device could have its own
settings for any of a few (I think 3) levels of spindown. The most useful
obviously being off, and fully awake...
And, noted that some ACPI implementations aren't too good, with APM support
that's worse because it's untested at the factory. If you have such a beast
you may want to become an early adopter on the 2.5 kernel series - my hubby
said he thought he saw a note that swsusp has been accepted as a feature for
that tree.
