Good thing you got system working.

I am not as good as you but I noticed following for PCMCIA.

PCMCIA card configuration program runs on back ground concurrently
with other programs.

This means, some configuration may encounter race condition if they are
run before finishing PCMCIA script.  PCMCIA script looks lile /bin/sh
script but they are not a simple part of normal sys-V init script!!!

I do not like this but that is standard...
