What's usually used is a mini hub (which is good to have
handy- I carry a heavy little metal linksys one myself.

For two machinews w/o a hub, yes you need a special
crossover cable or converter.  (If you get one, may I
suggest you label it carefully and prominently; I had one
that caused a lot of trouble when people kept grabbing it
when troubleshooting something else.
