Averatec 1020 vs Knoppix 5.0.1

I just bought an Averatec AV1020 notebook:
http://www.averatec.com/notebooks/1000series.htm

I tried to boot Knoppix 5.0.1. It did not succeed.

First problem: after Autoconfiguring devices ran for a fair bit of
time, the following message was displayed in the log:

	WARNING: Autodetection seems to hang,
please check your computers BIOS settings.

I don't actually know what to check, so I have not done so in any
serious way.

(BTW, "computers" should be "computer's".)

Next questionable log message:
	AGP bridge detected.
Video is (yet) unknown card, using Xorg(vesa) Server
Monitor is Generic Monitor, H:28.0-96.0kHz, V:50.0-75.0Hz
		Using Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
I would expect that the integrated Intel 855GM controller would be
understood since it is so common. I would hope that the 1280x768
resolution could be detected too.

Next: three ethernet interfaces seem to be detected. I don't know if
that is right. The computer has a wired and a wireless interface. I
don't think that there is another (unless firewire counts).
Network device eth0 detected, DHCP broadcasting for IP. (Backgrounding)
Network device eth1 detected, DHCP broadcasting for IP. (Backgrounding)
Network device eth2 detected, DHCP broadcasting for IP.udevd-event[3635]: wait_for_sysfs: waiting for '/sys/class/net/eth2/device/driver' failed
nothing more happens.

Any recommendations for figuring out what has gone wrong?

I'm now trying Knoppix 4.0.2 CD.

It detects the video controller correctly (I think):
Video is Intel Corp. 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device (rev 02), using XFree86(fbdev) Server
But the monitor detection output is no different.

It hangs during ethernet detection:
Network device eth0 detected, DHCP broadcasting for IP. (Backgrounding)
Network device eth1 detected, DHCP broadcasting for IP.

Ubuntu 6.06 live CD does work. It does not figure out the monitor's
resolution correctly.

The BIOS says it is AMI BIOS R1.05 Build date 07/13/05.
This seems rather old for a new unit. I don't see an update on the
manufacturer's site. I get the feeling from internet postings that,
for example, the DSDT table is buggy. See, for example,
