It requires far more time and skill than simply providing the make command and
variables that upstream has exposed as a long term stable interface for
building the kernel module. Additionally, the requirements for inclusion were
undocumented and not forthcoming in the initial suggestion NAK.

Therefore, there is no answer to your question at this time, as it was never
clear that one had to "add/adjust the toplevel makefile" to conform to an
integrated kbuild build enviroment, because that is a future policy. I'll leave
that to the first person who attempts to do this.
