nack it works on many boxes out there according to popcon stats.

did you check in the rescue shell:
a) if your root device existed
b) if your relevant modules where loaded

please use update-initramfs the command line syntax you are showing above
doesn't work for mkinitramfs

your system is not up2date you need to upgrade to latest udev!
please retest then with update-initramfs.
