You should be able to install the deb from sid directly without any
issues, and then remove it when done testing.

$ wget http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/l/linux-2.6/linux-image-2.6.18-1-686_2.6.18-1_i386.deb
$ dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.18-1-686_2.6.18-1_i386.deb
 -- test --
$ dpkg -r linux-image-2.6.18-1-686

Note that all bug fixes are happening with 2.6.18 as it is the kernel
most likely to ship with etch. I don't think there will be anymore
uploads of 2.6.17.
