After doing a distribution upgrade the problem seems to be solved. Sonow I don't have to do Ctrl-S nor to modify the init-premount file forthe usb disk to be detected before root is mounted.

I am using Debian GNU/Linux Sid, kernel 2.6.15-1-486 with udev 0.093-1and initramfs-tool 0.69b.
