By recompiling and installing the ALSA modules with thealsa-timer-irqsave-patch available at http://www.lxtec.de/debarchiv forkernel 2.6.17-1-686, I no longer have problems with MIDI playback on mySoundBlaster Live! 5.1 model 0220 sound card under kernel 2.6.17-1-686.
