Bug#305187: Another alsa problem, via82xx

I have the same basic problem. 2.6.8-2-k7: sound works, 2.6.11-1-k7, sound no workie.

My sounds stack looks like this under 2.6.8-2-k7:

snd_via82xx 29604 0
snd_ac97_codec 69508 1 snd_via82xx
snd_pcm_oss 54376 0
snd_mixer_oss 19904 1 snd_pcm_oss
snd_pcm 97480 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm_oss
snd_timer 25540 1 snd_pcm
snd_page_alloc 11720 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm
gameport 4736 1 snd_via82xx
snd_mpu401_uart 8000 1 snd_via82xx
snd_rawmidi 25316 1 snd_mpu401_uart
snd_seq_device 8264 1 snd_rawmidi
snd 57380 9 snd_via82xx,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device
soundcore 10400 1 snd

Under 2.6.11-1, it looked pretty much the same, except nothing worked..
After removing a USB sound device I had, mixers and stuff just reported no devices available.

Both kernels give me this banner in /var/log/messages:

Not sure what I should try to diagnose this [although, this is my workstation, so I can't reboot it all day..]

( I was hoping to find a solution to http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=278629)
