I think that in 2.4.27 Jeff Garzik's libata driver was added to
the kernel. That driver was already present in 2.6 kernels.

My guess is that you might have that partitions available under /dev/sda2
and /dev/sda3 or whatever other SCSI base name. libata treats SATA drives as
SCSI.
