Bug#270187: kernel-image-2.6.8-1-sparc64-smp: CONFIG_SMP=y breaks kernel when connecting over nullmodem

Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-1-sparc64-smp
Version: 2.6.8-2
Severity: important

The kernel installs fine, and the initrd image loads fine too, but at the point right when it checks the file systems for errors, the entire system freezes and I cannot do anything.
I am on a ultra 2 enterprise with Zilog8350 serial ports, 2 200 mhz ultra sparc processors, and instead of using a monitor and keyboard i use a nullmodem link and ssh to use the computer, so right now i cannot use 2.6.8 at all.
When using a homemade kernel, the computer locks up completely right after init finishes loading the last thing (apache) and before the login prompt.
Once i disable smp support the computer boots up fine, and it also boots up fine on 2.4.26-sparc64-smp
