Bug#256214: kernel-image-2.6.6-2-686-smp: Unable to load modules - Kernel Panic

Package: kernel-image-2.6.6-2-686-smp
Version: 2.6.6-2
Severity: important

On attempting to boot kernel-image-2.6.6-2-686-smp, I receive a flurry
of messages all declaring that modprobe is unable to open any modules:

modprobe: FATAL: Could not open /lib/modules/2.6.6-2-686-smp/<path to
module>: Read only file system

Root filesystem is XFS, /boot is Ext2. Ultimately, init is unable to
load, and the kernel panics.

Kernel 2.6.6-1-686-smp boots fine, but remains unused because of nvidia
modules problems. 2.6.5-1-686-smp has been working fine for months (Bug
253632 excepted).
