This is very interesting. In fact "free" does not indicate that I am really 
out of memory, so I was surprised by the frequency of swapping. This is 
typical output:

             total       used       free     shared    buffers     cached
Mem:       3956344    3666976     289368          0      35592     800440
- -/+ buffers/cache:    2830944    1125400
Swap:      3145720    2434812     710908
