Hi,

I am running the same software as you (except for xserver-xorg-video-intel 
2:2.7.99.901-1) on GM965 and I have no problems.

What's the output of glxinfo regarding the OpenGL renderer string? If it is 
software rasterizer, it may explain the lack of desktop effects.
