Ok, so your desktop is correctly configured (it accepts xdmcp sessions).

Take a look at the logfiles /var/log/Xfree*

It probably has the display number (1 probably, 0 is the first) in the 
name somewher (I'm on sid, using Xorg)

It will probably tell you the cause of your problem.
