Just a small word of warning. If you have a nice working unstable distro
on your computer, maybe now isn't the best time to upgrade it. x11r7 is
entering unstable, and it is causing a few minor hickups..
s/minor hickups/death to nvidia drivers if you upgrade
Thank you, that saved me the trouble to find that out myself. As it is,
I am having enough fun with my laptop, which I used as a guinea pig for
the upgrade: The xorg i810 driver of my graphics card boldly claims in
the log that DRI is enabled, but glxinfo and glxgears beg to differ. On
the other hand, the synaptics driver is broken according to the log
file, but the touchpad still works.

All these questions (and probably others) are answered on the XSF transition Wiki (http://wiki.debian.org/Xorg69To7). Please give us your solutions if there is no one for you. :-)

Hi there

I followed the advices on that page (and indeed I managed to make the
nvidia module work thanks to it), however, while on my desktop
everything works fine, on my laptop it does not: I cannot run startx as
a standard user (while I can as root), since I get this error:

Fatal server error:
Cannot move old log file ("/var/log/Xorg.0.log ......)

can anybody help please?

I think this is the actual problem (I couldn't start any session from
kde, and so I tried to run startx manually and got this...)

thanks in advance
	Lorenzo
