kdm freezes, root login required

Hello,

I am running Debian sarge with KDE 3.3 (Qt: 3.3.3, KDE: 3.3.2) and kdm
as the login manager.

After each reboot (or startup) I get the graphical login screen, but as
soon as I want to type my password the login manager (or kdm) freezes. I
can select `console login', login as root, kill kdm and run it again,
after which everything works fine.

I think somewhere in the startup scripts there is something wrong. Can
anybody point me to (threads containing) the solution to this problem?
