This is OK.

Done this and reinstalled kdm. Now it lists all users including all system 
users but still can't start any window manager. Small progress: it *can* shut 
down the PC!

Yes, there were some. I removed these. Still doesn't work. Indication that 
this is the root of the problem and there are still some around: when 
unsucessfully trying to start a window manger, kdm briefly displays the 
Gnome-type round whirly cursor instead of the KDE arrow cursor.

In this there are 45 files xxx.desktop including kde.desktop. Looking into 
this doesn't tell me anything.

I guess I'll have to, but I'm anti-gdm, as it doesn't allow a shutdown without 
the root password (at least I couldn't find the right setting)

There is no /var/log/kdm.log, but a /var/log/gdm.log! 

It looks like I have to reinstall gdm in order to see where it puts all its 
files and remove each one manually. Incidently, gdm seems about ten times the 
size as kdm, with 10% of the options...
