Slow program opening, installation size and window tiling

Hi Everyone,
I'm new to linux and I've got a few questions. I'm running debian
sarge with the 2.4 kernel on a Dell Inspiron 3500 (4 gig HD, 300 MHz, 256
MB RAM, 256 MB swap).

The first question and the easiest is this: Is there a way to
tile windows automatically? In ms windows I can click on the taskbar and
select 'tile windows horizontally' or 'tile windows vertically'. I sure
would like to be able to do this in KDE but I have yet to find a way.

Second question: Sometimes when I go to open something; say my
home directory or a program (Quanta for example) it takes a LONG time to
come up. I'll see the little hourglass animation on the panel and after
maybe 30 seconds it disappears from the panel entirely. Then maybe 3
minutes later it will finally open up. I've checked my RAM usage as this
happens and I'm certainly not using up all of my ram. Anyone know what
could be causing this and how to fix it?

Third question: It seems like the basic install of sarge with KDE
is taking up almost 1.7 GB. This seems like an awfully big footprint. So
I'm looking for ways to get rid of things that I don't need. So I was
looking into getting rid of say the kde games package. But when I look
around in the package manager (synaptics) I find that the kde games
package is a dependency of the kde entertainments package which is in turn
a dependency of the kde package. So, it's looking to me like I can't
remove the games without removing kde completely. I must be wrong...
right?
Also, I know this is the KDE list but, does anyone have an opinion
as to whether I need gnome on my computer? I never use it but as a linux
newbie I'm not sure if it would be wise to remove it (maybe some programs
I use in kde need it's files?)
In general, (and I know this is hard to answer without knowing
exactly what I'm doing with my computer) does anyone have suggestions for
things I could remove to free up some space?

Thanks Folks!

James
