ok, it appears that the imap commands being issued by kmail are:

uid fetch 1:* (uid flags)
* 1  FETCH(UID 6189 FLAGS(\Seen))

noop
OK NOOP

uid fetch 6189:6190 (uid envelope rfc822.size internaldate flags)
* 1 FETCH (UID 6189 ENVELOPE (<date> <subject>))

noop
OK NOOP

uid fetch 6189 (uid body.peek[body.peek[]])
BAD PROTOCOL ERROR: "One of the supplied fetch items is invalid".

noop

noop

uid fetch 1:* (uid flags)
* 1  FETCH(UID 6189 FLAGS(\Seen))

repeat x a lot

i'm fairly certain that the problem is the nested body.peek, but i have no
idea how to go about changing this.
