Ermmm. That was a lot of text. And the reason why GUIs are just *sometimes* 
useful.

Paste or type

dcop kdesktop KDesktopIface setIconsEnabled false
dcop kdesktop KDesktopIface setIconsEnabled true 

into a konsole window ;)
