No.

I ain't sure about this, but I just skimmed the documentation on IOSlaves, and 
as far at I can tell, this is not possible.

The thing is that to be able to play multimedia directly from a file system, 
you need to be able to get the data in particular size chunks for decoding, 
also you need to be able to scan around inside the file, for instance if you 
want to fast forward or rewind.

These operations are not supported by ioslaves. All you can do (essentially) 
is to list directory contents and copy files. Therefore you always need to 
get a local copy of the file before you can watch it in your media player.

A way around this is to mount smb shares directly into your filesystem using 
smbfs. This is what I do.

This is something I think needs to be improved, since this bugs me a lot as 
well.
