Arts crashes in KDE3.1.1

Hello list,
I have updated from KDE2.2 to KDE3.1.1 on a Woody (3.0R1) box running a 2.4.20
kernel. Arts is configured to use Alsa, which I compiled myself for this
kernel.
I got the KDE upgrade from http://ktown.kde.org/~nolden/kde.
Arts keeps crashing when I start certain applications, most consistently with:
- - kmid (on startup)
- - krec (on startup; only sometimes, see below)
- - arts control tool (when opening View Environment)
- - arts builder (when executing a structure)
I get the KDE Crash Handler telling me the app caused the signal 11 (SIGSEGV).
Also, when I start krec (and is does not crash completely), artsd dies, and I
get the following message.
See: http://home.tiscali.nl/arts/KRec_problem.png
However, when I do 'artsshell stereoeffect list', I get:
Arts::Effect_WAVECAPTURE
Arts::Synth_FREEVERB
Arts::Synth_STEREO_COMPRESSOR
Arts::Synth_STEREO_FIR_EQUALIZER
Arts::Synth_STEREO_PITCH_SHIFT
Arts::Synth_STEREO_PITCH_SHIFT_FFT
