Ok, it's seems to be a feature: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51535
There is also a solution described, how to let kmail behave like in 1.4.x :-)

Ralf: If you still have that libtaskbar.so, would you mind e-mailing it to me? 
It's confusing to me, not having a taskbar ;-)
