saving files crashes application

Hi,

since several weeks I've a problem which seems to grow:

During drag+drop operations or when saving in kde apps (e.g. saving 
attachments in kmail) the application (kdesktop, konqueror, kmail) crashes 
without any error message.
The problem resists while upgrading from 3.0.3 to 3.0.4 (libqt 3.0.5-4)
I've also upgraded X in several steps from 4.2.0 to 4.2.1-2

- debian unstable (kernel 2.4.18)
- xfree 4.2.1-2
- IBM thinkpad T20
- Savage driver version 1.1.25t

Any suggestions where to search?
