kdeinit and ksmserver won't start

After trashing my .kderc directory in a vain attempt to reset KDE, I have lost all ability to use X.

When I startx, the graphic Liquid splash screen pops up.  Two dialogs appear in order: Cannot start kdeinit and cannot start the ksmserver.  Then I am dumped back into the console.

I've tried deleting as many KDE apps and libraries as I could and then re-installing them.  No luck.  I think I need to delete the entire KDE distribution and reinstall from the beginning.

I hope someone has ideas about how to expedite this process.  Anyone?

Bob
