[KDE3] Where to set $KDEDIR(S)

Hi,
I think everyone running KDE on debian has this Problem:
selfcompiled programs usually resist in /usr/local/kde, however this isn't
inside $KDEDIRS.
I solved this problem for KDE2, but I can't figure out, where to set this for
KDE3.
thanx in advance (and KDE3 with liquid is really great!)
