Double server reset with kdm

I am running woody with the latest updates and experience a strange
problem with the X server resetting twice when I logoff of a KDE
session.  If I select logoff from KDE, it brings me back to the kdm
login screen, and then after about 5 seconds, it resets the X server.

Can anybody explain what's going on and how I might fix it?
