Can you be more specific about your e-mail error messages.  kmail works great 
with smtp but often smtp servers will only forward e-mail for specific 
accounts (otherwise they are a potential open relay for spammers) - so it may 
depend on factors related to gmx.

One solution is to run a mail server on your own linux box (try exim for 
instance), and get kmail to send mail out via this local server
