KDE compile complains about missing libjpeg.la

Hi,
whenever I try to compile KDE 2.2.1 on my Debian Woody system, it complains
that it can't find libjpeg.la ... The configure script doesn't say anything
about it but pretty much at the beginning of the compile, it quits with this
error. What are those .la files anyway and where do I get one from for
libjpeg?
