Bravo. Bravissimo.... and Much thanks ... that's it!!!!!!
in file /etc/kde2/kdm/Xservers I changed:
     :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp
to
     :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt7 -dpi 100 -nolisten tcp

Ivan (or is anyone in Debian listening?) They also might be
aware of a reason for leaving the vt7 out!

OK .. It looks like afterstep (session I tried) is found and then it
starts up /usr/bin/x-session-manager which is symlinked to
/etc/alternatives/x-session-manager which is symlinked to kde2

I think I've found my "shot in the leg" repair from several months
ago. I might have done it to let me get into kde. Unfortunately
I was not a good boy and didn't keep a copy of existing
x-session-manager! I will look into this later on.

Correct! I had made the modification in two places ... only need it in
Xsetup!

I believe so... unfortunately, I can't test that. At times kdm fails
and I'm stuck without X on Woody and I will try whatever I can to start
it. But since you are listening - Is there any way to put back either
the CTRL-R (probably from xdm days) or the 'return to system console'
which was in KDE 2.1 KDM and is not in KDE 2.2 KDM? I do use
the ALT-Fn keys but I don't think they are active during KDM Login.

Thanks again for your assistance.
