kde 2.2.1 soundserver vs dmasound

Hello,
    Has anyone managed to get the current kde 2.2.1 from
sid (or woody) to work properly on debian ppc? I have
never had any luck with 2.2.x of kde using the stock
dmasound-pmac sound drivers. With those the artsd sound
server crashes at start with an error about cpu load.
I had been able to get alsa 0.9 work with kde 2.2.1 
in OSS compatibility mode however changes in the current
BenH kernel for linuxppc breaks alsa. I would think
we shouldn't be forcing users to use alsa however.
Anyway I would like to hear if any other Debian ppc woody
or sid users have the problem and/or a workaround. Also
does this effect other arches. I had heard rumors that
the soundserver in 2.2.x was pretty broken and was being
totally overhauled for 3.0. Thanks in advance for any
information.
