This only works if you start your application from the console (tested with
kword and kate). To get a euro symbol in all applications I simply added
export LC_ALL="de_DE.ISO8859-15"
to my .xsession file. Unfortunaley the tilde symbol doesn't now work any
longer in kde :-(
