Re: almost there.. I think (KDE2.2 install)

I'm still having kdm problems but I eventually got it to start up from the shell but.. and this seems weird...

I can get KDE launched if I say that I have a Cirrus graphics card but it will only display at 640x480, I do get an error to do with the mouse "Cannot open device /dev/input/mice No such file or directory" (when I logout I see this but the mouse appears to work fine whilst within kde)

If I go to graphics driver 'Vesa' which is what i used to use with Potato and KDE2.1 it starts to load KDE in 800x600 but crashes on loading peripherals with the same error message to do with the mouse.

I'm sure this is something terribly simple but I seem to have tried all available options in XFree86 to no avail. I don't know a huge amount about this box (its a second user Compaq Deskpro 2000) but I have the monitor settings. This does appear to be a mouse issue yet its effecting the screen res?

Just as a point of info that took me a bit to figure out, you can set
your preferred login manager in /etc/X11/default-display-manager. For
example, mine says:

        /usr/bin/gdm
