I would vote for anything but the present system.  I understand that the /opt 
directory is a verboten subject here but if I can be sure that Debian 
respects the variables qtdir, kdedir  etc  - I intend to try and compile qt 
2.3.x and kde 2.2.1 to their own directories. 

All the problems I see,  could be solved with the use of a few symlinks [ to 
get back to a working KDE ].
