apt-get install xmmsarts
start xmms
^p
change output plugin to
aRts Driver 0.4 (libartsout.so)

I don't know about the idea, but I guess you could disable aRts as the KDE
sound server. But I don't know if that will leave you ANY sounds for KDE
then. (shrug)
