jamvm, sablevm, kaffe, gij are great candidates. I don't know much about
other VM in Debian.

Some had success with free VM's and eclipse 2.1, but I think eclipse 3
does not run on free VM.
ArgoUML does not run with free VM's at the moment because of Swing
problems. I need to finish libjmi-java and I'll package the new ArgoUML
upstream and I'll try to build it with free VM's.

I don't know but it's maybe a good idea if you want to install some
packages that require a non-free JRE.
