Mysql non parte

Hi, I've got a problem with mysql4 on debian. I've installed with apt
but I get this error:

ho un problema con mysql. Ho installato mysql con apt
#apt-get install mysql-server mysql-common

ma ho questo errore:

# /etc/init.d/mysql start
Starting MySQL database server: mysqld...failed.
         Please take a look at the syslog.
/usr/bin/mysqladmin: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket:
'/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' exists

mysqld.sock non esiste, e cosa dovrei fare?
ho provato anche con mysql4.1 ma sempre lo stesso errore

qui ecco il syslog:

resulted in
