Hai provato da root? Ci sono i permessi per il DRI nell'apposita sezione del
file di configurazione di X e magari sono impostati male (o non sono
impostati proprio). Per esempio (ho buttato giù di google a casaccio)

Down near the bottom of the file, there's a little subsection for DRI 
permissions that you can uncomment if you wish non-root users to be able to
use direct rendering (of course you do... you won't be playing games as
root)
