Probabilmente non sbagli, dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86 (controlla anche
che sia installato il pacchetto xlibmesa3).

Fatto, ma e' stato inutile. Same as before. Ho letto da qualche parte che per la mia Voodoo3 3000 devo usare il driver tdfx (io usavo vesa), ma mettendoci tdfx X11 non parte, dendomi questo bell'errorone:

Riscrivendo solo "vesa" al posta di "tdfx" nel file di config, va tutto a posto.

Quindi?

Questo e' un comportamento normale, prima di diventare root dai il comando
xhost + per disabilitare il controllo per l'accesso dei client.
