$TMPDIR non funziona con xterm

In .bash_profile ho:

TMPDIR='/tmp'
export TMPDIR

ed in .bashrc ho questa linea:

alias rm='mv -i --target-directory=/$TMPDIR'

ma ottengo un errore quando da una xterm cerco di rimuovere un file,
questo perchè ho notato che la variabile TMPDIR sotto xterm non è
settata. 

Perchè succede questo?
