prova a fare cat /proc/bus/usb/devices

Se il joystick ti viene visto dovrebbe compartirti una serie di righe
legate al joystick. Almeno quando mi hanno prestato un wingman della
logitech per vedere se l'usb andava mi veniva rilevato e aggiunto a
questo file...
