Java support for ia64 web browsers
Since I have been complaining a lot about broken things recently, I
figured it's time to balance things out and mention a pleasant
surprise:
One thing that has annoyed me for a long time was the lack of Java
support in ia64 browsers. Granted, I could run x86 browsers with Java
enabled, but somehow the Java support always seemed broken whenever I
had the occasional need for it.
Now I found that there is a new Debian package "gcjwebplugin". It
uses the gij Java interpreter for providing Java applet support. To
my pleasant surprise, it was trivial to install the package ("apt-get
install gcjwebplugin" was all it took...) and it even works
surprisingly well. It's not perfect yet, but I think it's a solution
that makes tons of sense and I expect things to improve rapidly.
Whoever put in the work behind gcjwebplugin, a big thanks!
Enjoy,
