This really is strange... After resizing the window to 80x25,
everything works as expected. And it keeps doing so even though I have
maximized the window again.
I just logged out of my Gnome session and back into it. Same thing:
messed up display in maximized gnome-terminal, resizing to 80x25 and
maximizing the window again, everything works...
