A recent upgrade with aptitude on testing exited halfway through with the
following error:

Preconfiguring packages ...
Setting up libpam0g (0.76-23) ...
/var/lib/dpkg/info/libpam0g.postinst: line 3: 31771 Illegal instruction
ldconfig
dpkg: error processing libpam0g (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 132
Errors were encountered while processing:
 libpam0g
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Attempting to run ldconfig yields the following output:

dmcnet:~# ldconfig
Illegal instruction

I am using kernel 2.2.20

This is why it's nice to use reportbug... what platform is this? i386?

I don't have reportbug installed and can't install using apt. I hadn't considered trying to download and install using dpkg. That would have been a good idea.

uname -a reports i686

processor is Pentium III
