I have more information to offer; it appears to be a version skew
problem.  Updating only gcc-3.3 and not g++-3.3 is what triggered the
problem (g++ was expecting includes in the old location, gcc had
removed/moved them).  I'd have thought the wrappers would prevent this
problem, but perhaps not and this is a simple missed dependency problem.

apt-get install g++-3.3 brought things inline and g++ works now so I
can no longer offer what was in confdefs.h :-(

In any case, this is now very clearly not a grave bug.
